Weekend Visits

For years I watched as a dear friend of mine lived for his weekend visits with his son. As a result on a painful divorce my friend was left with only weekend visits with his son and not even every weekend. I believe it was every other weekend that my friend would get to spend with his young son. He longed for those two days to reconnect with and build a deeper relationship with his son. My friend was indeed the underdog as it is so difficult to develop a deep bond with your child through weekend visits. You know, the same is true in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. I wonder if some Christians view their relationship with God as a weekend visitation only. We visit God each Sunday as we assemble with the church and worship so we're good for the rest of the week. What if you only saw or heard from your children on Sunday? That just wouldn't be acceptable, would it? You would talk and even plead with your kids to visit more often so that you could have a closer relationship with them. How do you think God must feel when his children only give Him weekend visits? Just as my friend desired more time with his son so God desires more time with His sons and daughters. May we never view our relationship with God as a "weekend visits" kind of relationship. Let us spend time in prayer and in His Word daily so that we can enjoy a stronger and closer relationship with God. "We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, I know him, but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him."(I Jno.2:3-4)
