"A Spiritual Drought"
April 23, 2026 | By Chuck
If you have watched the news at all lately, you know that we are in the midst of a drought. We are well into spring and far behind on rainfall this season. The earth and all that it produces desperately depends on rain. It’s easy to see the effects the drought has on the trees, grass and flowers. It’s as if they literally thirst for a drink.
As we face this drought that will end eventually, I wonder are we in a spiritual drought? A spiritual drought is when we deprive ourselves of the necessary spiritual nutrients of God’s Word. A spiritual drought is the direct result of ignoring the importance of reading God’s Word. Flowers and grass die from an extended drought without water. What about the danger for Christians in a spiritual drought? If we aren’t careful this world will shape us into the people God does not want us to be. That can happen so easily and quickly when we are in the midst of a spiritual drought and not studying God’s Word.
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:1-2). Do you thirst for God the way the land thirsts for water? Does your soul yearn to be filled with the knowledge of God’s Word? As blood purchased children of God, I believe we should thirst for God. To ignore that thirst for God is to willingly accept a spiritual drought in your own life. The only way to end a spiritual drought is to drink deep of the waters of God’s Word.
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you” (Psalm 63:1).
