Hiding God's Word

"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."(Psalm 119:11) I don't know about you, but when I think about hiding something it's not my Bible I want to hide. I will gladly display my Bible for all to see but try so hard to hide my imperfections. Even though everyone knows that I'm not perfect and that I sin, I still strongly desire to hide those weaknesses. Are not most of us like that? We all sin (Rom.3:23) but we will sure go to great lengths to hide our sin from others. In the above cited verse the Psalmist instructs us to hide God's Word. What? Makes no sense, right? Sure it does, as we are to hide God's Word in our hearts. What exactly does that mean? We hide God's Word in our hearts when we study it, memorize it and know it in such a way that it changes the way we live. What's the point? We should hide God's Word in our hearts to keep us from sinning. Yes we're imperfect and we'll still sin, but with the knowledge of God's Word tucked away in our hearts we will be strong enough to withstand many temptations and overcome. Jesus responded to each of Satan's temptations with Scripture and was able to overcome and say no to each opportunity to sin. (Mt.4:1-11;Lk.4:1-13) Jesus had hidden God's Word in his heart and was able to draw from that at a vulnerable time in his life. God's Word lets us know what sin is and instructs us in how we can overcome Satan and his temptations to sin. So, we should not waste our time trying to hide our sin from others, but instead hide God's Word in our hearts so that we will not sin.
